Cost of living guide
As you get ready for your exciting journey with UQ College and UQ, let's talk about something really important—money.
We know that managing expenses can seem like a big hurdle, especially if you're an international student. But getting a good handle on your finances now is key.
So, before you arrive, it's essential to take a moment to understand the costs of living and studying in Australia. Here is a guide to help you budget for life in Brisbane.
Travel expenses
Most international students will require a Student visa (subclass 500) to study at UQ. These visas start from AUD $2,000 (unless exempt). Apply as soon as you receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), as processing times can vary.
For more information on visa types, requirements, and how to apply, explore the resources below or speak with an authorised agent.
All international students on a student visa must have OSHC, which helps cover the cost of basic medical and hospital care while in Australia.
You can arrange OSHC through UQ or choose an approved provider. Make sure your cover is in place for the full duration of your stay.
International students
Travel costs to Brisbane will vary depending on your location, with additional expenses to consider such as flights, airport transfers, and initial accommodation. It’s recommended you budget for arrival costs, including transport and short-term living expenses when you first arrive.

Domestic students
If you’re relocating to Brisbane, consider travel and moving costs such as transport, temporary accommodation, and setting up your new living arrangements. Planning ahead will help you manage your initial expenses.
The Australian Department of Home Affairs requires international students to show a financial capacity of at least AUD $29,710 per year (approximately $2,480 per month) to cover living expenses such as accommodation, food, and utilities.
In addition, we recommend budgeting an additional AUD $4,000–$5,000 for upfront costs such as flights, visa fees, OSHC, and settling in.
