Online delivery and study commitment

Delivered completely online, these self-paced courses allow you to complete a Maths prerequisite from your own home, making it easy to fit study around your current work or personal schedule.

• Learning support: You'll have access to weekly online check-ins and ongoing learning support from our highly qualified teachers at UQ College.
• Pacing: The pace of the learning is completely up to you. However, to help you plan, we recommend the following commitment:
  • If you invest 3–5 hours of dedicated study every week, you can expect to complete the Pure Mathematics course in approximately 30 weeks.
  • The General Mathematics course can be completed in approximately 20 weeks with the same weekly study investment.

To be awarded the Statement of Attainment, you must complete the course within 12 months from your commencement date.

Pure Mathematics (Mathematical Methods)

This course is the equivalent of Mathematical Methods for prerequisite purposes. You will develop the skills and knowledge to solve mathematical problems involving linear functions, quadratics, trigonometry and measurement. You will also develop the ability to comprehend and apply mathematical concepts and techniques drawn from relations and functions, probability and statistics, index laws, and exponential and logarithmic functions as well as calculus. 

This prerequisite course suits students who need to meet the entry requirements for programs such as Biomedical Science, Commerce, Information Technology, Engineering and Science. 

General Mathematics

You will develop the skills and knowledge required to solve general mathematical programs involving algebra, probability, and statistics. You will also learn how to apply mathematical concepts and techniques to perform calculations involving numbers, measurement, and finance. 

This prerequisite course is ideal for students who may want to study programs such as Business Management, Education, or some Science and Health programs. 

Depending on which course you study, you'll be asked to complete either exams or a combination of exams and assignments

General Mathematics

Each unit consists of 1 assignment and 2 exams 

Pure Mathematics


Each unit consists of 3 exams 

Exams

Exam timeslots are scheduled on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm AEST (UTC +10). Once you have completed the learning content in a module, you may sign up for the next exam date. Exams are completed online and proctored via Zoom with the use of browser lockdown software.

Statement of Attainment

At the end of the online course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment, which will indicate whether you are competent or not competent. You must then list this qualification in your application to university.

You will also be provided with a final result on the 1 – 7 UQ Grading Scale.

Students may find access to some UQ software and systems restricted from their country. We recommend students use a VPN service if this occurs.

Domestic students

You must:

• Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen
• Be at least 17 years old
• Have successfully completed Mathematics at a minimum Australian Year 10 level 

What you need:

• A passport, or government-issued ID
• A high school academic transcript, school report or similar
• Unique Student Identifier (USI)

If you don’t already hold a USI, go to www.usi.gov.au to create one. 

As part of your application, you will also be asked to complete an online Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) test and a Digital Literacy assessment.

By applying for this program, you acknowledge that: This course is comparable in standard to Australian Year 11 and 12 Mathematics subjects. A sufficient level of English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5 is required to understand course materials. This course requires access to reliable internet and a computer with a webcam and microphone.

Apply as a domestic student

International students

You must:

• NOT be living in Australia
• Be at least 17 years old
• Have an English language proficiency (ELP) result of IELTS 5.5 (no band <5) or equivalent 
• Have successfully completed Mathematics at a minimum Australian Year 10 level or equivalent

• An accepted ELP test result
• A high school academic transcript or similar

What is the purpose of this course?

The purpose of the course is to support you to fulfil UQ Undergraduate program prerequisites for Mathematical Methods (Pure Mathematics) or General Mathematics.

How are these classes taught?

As the course is delivered online and is self-paced, you will have access to online resources through the learning management system. This includes access to your study modules, activities, assessment tasks, and interaction with your teachers and other learners.

How many hours does this course require?

There are no set hours of study as the course is designed to be self-paced. However as a broad guide, students investing 3 to 5 hours per week in the course can expect to complete it within 30 weeks for Pure Mathematics and 20 weeks for General Mathematics. 

How long will the course be open to be completed?

From your commencement date, you will have 12 months to complete the course.

What is the eligibility criteria for domestic students?

• Be an Australian citizen a permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen
• Be at least 17 years old
• Have successfully completed Mathematics at a minimum Australian Year 10 level 

What are the eligibility criteria for international students?

• NOT be living in Australia
• Be at least 17 years old

Why can’t onshore international students apply for these courses?

As these courses are not CRICOS coded, we cannot offer the Online Bridging Courses to international students who are already in Australia. 

Does this program have an age limit?

The program does not have an age limit, although you must be at least 17 years old.

Do I have to be a current UQC or UQ student to apply for the course?

No, you can enrol in the course without being a current UQ or UQ College student.

Can a student take this course while studying at high school or university?

Yes, students do not necessarily have to have completed high school to commence these courses, as long as they meet the entry requirements. Students can also undertake these courses while studying at university.

After I apply, can I start the course immediately?

You will be able to start the course at the next commencement date. Commencement occurs on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. If you would like to delay your start, you may choose the month your course begins. You'll will be enrolled in the first commencement date of your chosen month. 

How do I apply for a UQ program using the Bridging Course to meet the prerequisites?

You will need to apply separately for the UQ undergraduate program. Please ensure you check application due dates and allow sufficient time for issuing the Statement of Attainment after course completion (up to 30 days). The application method depends on your student status.

Domestic students

All undergraduate applications must be submitted through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). Applicants need to upload bridging results (Statement of Attainment) to their QTAC application.

International students (schooling is from Australia)

If you’re an international student currently studying Year 12 in Australia or studying Australian Year 12 in another country, submit your application through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). 

International students (all other)

Most international students apply directly to UQ. Applicants will need to upload the Statement of Attainment to their application on UQ’s application portal.

Are there any assessments in the course?

The assessment consists of several written examinations which are completed online and proctored via Zoom with the use of browser lockdown software. 

At the end of the online course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment indicating whether you are competent or not competent. Students must then list this qualification during their application to UQ. You will also be provided with a final result on the 1–7 UQ Grading Scale.

Depending on which course you study, you'll be asked to complete either exams or a combination of exams and assignments.

General Mathematics: Each unit consists of 1 assignment and 2 exams.

Pure Mathematics: Each unit consists of 3 exams.

Exams are supervised on Zoom during set time slots. Exams and assignments will be accessed and submitted via Blackboard.  

How do I take an exam?

Exam timeslots are scheduled on the first and third Friday of each month, typically from 6:00pm to 9:00pm AEST. Once you have completed the learning content in a module, you may sign up for the next exam date. 

Your examination will be supervised through Zoom, meaning that you must have your camera turned on for the duration. Assessment documents and submission will be through Blackboard. 

What resources do I need to start the course?

You will need to have a reliable internet connection, an approved calculator, and a personal computer device.

What sort of calculator should I use?

Below is a list of UQ-approved calculators for use in these courses. Your calculators will be checked before completing any assessments in the course.

Do students have access to a tutor?

Yes, they do. There are weekly check-in sessions where students can meet with a tutor each week via Zoom for online assistance. Students can also book one-on-one consultations with their teacher.
