Our programs are ideal for secondary school teachers as well as higher education academics from universities and vocational education institutions. As the English language program provider for UQ, one of the world’s top 50 universities, you will be taught by highly qualified experts in English education, applied linguistics, and internationalisation.

English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (EMTP)

For Secondary school English language teachers to learn new methodologies and strategies for teaching.

This program is specifically designed for Secondary school English language teachers from a Non-English-Speaking Background (NESB). It is designed to improve your own language skills while exposing you to innovative methodologies and strategies for teaching English. We will help you move towards a more student-centred classroom, increase student motivation, and enable your students to gain confidence and communicate better in English.

EMTP program includes:

Interactive workshops covering many teaching methodologies
Off-campus learning experiences at local secondary schools
Allocated time for independent study and review
Practical classroom activities

English Medium Instruction for Higher Education (EMI-HEd)

For non-English teachers to learn skills and processes to deliver respective subjects in English.

This program is designed for higher education academic and teaching staff (non-English teachers) to learn the skills and processes required to deliver their respective subjects in English, thereby improving their students’ academic outcomes. The classes adopt a practical approach, effectively blending theoretical concepts with hands-on practice.

EMI-HEd program includes:

Applying EMI in your context
Adapting lecture delivery and written materials
Adapting language for seminars and tutorials
Effective instruction techniques

Accommodation options

Our fixed-date programs include three accommodation options, with varying costs and benefits.

Homestay: Live like an Australian with a local family organised by AHN. You’ll have your own bedroom and meals provided (2x Mon-Fri, 3x Sat-Sun).
Apartment: A one-bedroom apartment at Oaks on Charlotte Street. Enjoy easy access to shopping, restaurants, and convenient transport to UQ St Lucia.
Self-organised: If you prefer to choose your own accommodation, you can!

Group programs

Program overview

Our programs can be fully customised to align with your organisation’s professional development needs, resources, and budget. We partner with The Queensland Institute to ensure exceptional delivery quality. We offer three distinct program types for group bookings:

English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (EMTP)

For English teachers (NESB) to improve their language skills while learning new methodologies and strategies (e.g. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) principles).

English Medium Instruction (EMI)

For non-English language teachers (e.g. academics teaching engineering or business) to deliver their respective subjects in English.

Integrated English (IE) plus Teacher Development Elective

Allows participants to improve their general English skills through the IE program, with an elective subject focused on teaching English. A minimum study duration of 5 weeks is required.

We offer flexible delivery to meet your requirements:

Face-to-face in Brisbane, Australia: Delivery at UQ College, UQ St Lucia, provides an immersion opportunity, including professional school visits and guest presentations.
Face-to-face in your country.
Online delivery.

Note: All programs, except the Integrated English option, are available in these flexible modes.

Group size is limited to a minimum of 12 participants and a maximum of 18 participants (or multiples thereof) for programs delivered in Australia.

English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes

The English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (EMTP) program is a customised group program specifically designed for English teachers from a Non-English-Speaking background (NESB).

The program offers an opportunity to enhance your English language skills while at the same time learning creative and innovative methodologies appropriate for teaching English in your context. The program includes workshops, demonstration lessons and practical activities using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) principles. These principles will help you to make your lessons more student centred, increase student motivation and enable your students to gain confidence by communicating more effectively in English.

Benefits include:

Learning from highly qualified English language teacher(s) with many years of experience in teaching students and training teachers
Exploring new approaches to the teaching of English in an increasingly international context
Boosting teacher motivation and confidence in using English effectively in the classroom
Developing practical insights into teaching through professional visits to Australian schools.

English Medium Instruction

With an increasingly global world, there is a greater need for communicative skills in a second or third language. This customised group program is designed for higher education academic and teaching staff who deliver subject content in English.

It is a practical program focusing on how to deliver content effectively, improve language learning and learning skills. The program offers a range of learning strategies that can be used in the classroom, and you will complete a project in which you apply the principles to some of your own teaching materials.

Benefits include:

Gaining a clear understanding of EMI principles and best practices.
Exploring strategies to support subject-specific language and communication needs.
Enhancing English proficiency for effective teaching and interaction.
Learning strategies to develop learners' cognitive and academic skills.
Designing engaging lesson plans and activities for an EMI environment.

Participant feedback has been highly positive both during the program and on successfully applying the EMI principles and learning strategies to various discipline areas.

The program length, content and focus can be customised and negotiated to suit the needs of clients.

IE + Teacher Training Elective

Integrated English is our flagship standalone English program and is ideal to improve your English language proficiency with other students at a similar level to you. The Integrated English program is organised into 5-week sessions.

The last 4 weeks of each session have one day dedicated to an elective. The Teacher Development Elective is designed for pre-service and in-service teachers who want to improve their teaching practice in English.

The weekly (except week 1) Integrated English with Teacher Development Elective includes:

16 hours of Integrated English language lessons
4 hours of the Teacher Training Elective

The Teacher Development Elective covers development skills, including:
