English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (EMTP)

Two teachers working at a desk The English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (EMTP) program is a customised group program specifically designed for English teachers from a Non-English-Speaking background (NESB).

The program offers an opportunity to enhance your English language skills while at the same time learning creative and innovative methodologies appropriate for teaching English in your context. The program includes workshops, demonstration lessons and practical activities using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) principles. These principles will help you to make your lessons more student centred, increase student motivation and enable your students to gain confidence by communicating more effectively in English.

EMTP - Optional Phase II: Continuing Professional Development

To support ongoing Professional Development for teachers there is the option of adding a Phase II to the EMTP group program.

This option is undertaken in the participants’ country of origin, ideally 6-8 months after EMTP group program. This allows participants time to experiment with and reflect on teaching techniques and methodologies presented in the EMTP group program.

Depending on the group’s professional development objectives, this could include;

individual classroom observation and feedback for teachers,

online workshops for teacher participants,

assistance with the development of support networks such as support through an online learning community

It has been found that teachers who participated in Phase II were more confident in implementing and applying the strategies and teaching techniques as well as establishing support networks and other initiatives.

Delivery Modes

All EMTP programs can be delivered to groups of teachers face-to-face at UQ College, face-to face offshore or online. Delivery at UQ College at The University of Queensland St Lucia campus provides an immersion opportunity and allows for professional school visits and guest presentations. Group size is limited to a minimum of 12 participants and a maximum of 18 (or multiples thereof) for programs delivered in Australia.

EMTP programs can also be delivered offshore depending on client requirements, budget and learning objectives. UQ College has extensive experience in offshore delivery. Programs can be delivered in negotiation with UQ College in line with resource commitments, in collaboration with local partner universities, budget allocations and optimal program timing.

Fixed Date Programs

UQ College is also offers a fixed-date, mixed-nationality Joint English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (JEMTP) program in 2026 for individual and small group enrolments at our St Lucia Campus in Brisbane.

The JEMTP program provides an opportunity for individuals or groups of teachers from different regions and countries to undertake professional training in a mixed-nationality environment, to share their teaching experiences and to develop their own professional skills through English communication and teaching methodology training.
