Overview

Integrated English (IE) will improve your everyday and academic English skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. At higher levels, the course will help you prepare for the Academic IELTS test. You will have the opportunity to choose an elective class* as part of your course. Possible electives include Business English, Academic English Skills, IELTS, Pearson PTE-A and Tourism and Hospitality.

Who is this program for?

Integrated English is ideal for a wide range of abilities and goals. Study English for life, travel or pathway into the UQ College Foundation Program. Integrated English is also suitable for students wishing to study in an English medium university and who need an IELTS score to enter.

Passing Integrated English assessment does not enable direct entry to UQ.
 

What you will learn

Integrated English classes will help you:

  • Develop your confidence with the English language
  • Understand spoken English in conversations and lectures
  • Speak fluently, clearly and confidently
  • Express facts, ideas and opinions in writing, using correct and appropriate vocabulary, grammatical structures
  • Apply a range of reading skills to understand and respond to written texts

Entry to a UQ Program (UQ Package Offer) 

If you meet the academic requirements for entry to a UQ program but need to meet the English language entry requirements, you can apply for a UQ package offer. The UQ package offer includes:

  • An English course (Integrated English or Bridging English) designed to help you get to the level you need for entry into your UQ program, and 
  • a conditional place in your preferred program

The minimum IELTS score for a package offer is IELTS 5.0 or equivalent. See entry requirements below.

Entry into the UQ College Foundation Program (UQ College Package Offer)

If you want to enter the UQ College Foundation Program, but do not meet the IELTS (or equivalent) entry requirement, you can apply for an English and Foundation Package. When you successfully complete Integrated English Level 3, you can enter the UQ College Standard Foundation Program.

Bring your own device (BYOD)

As a UQ College student, you will need to bring your own computer. This will allow you to fully participate in lessons, carry out self-study tasks and take computer-based assessments.

Prior to your study, you must ensure your device meet minimum specifications as outlined in our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy. You will also need to complete a BYOD agreement as a part of your orientation.

Entry Requirements

  • Package offer students must have an accepted English language test result. Note the minimum requirement for a UQ package offer is IELTS 5.0 with no skill below 5.0
  • Unless stated otherwise, all UQ Package Offer lengths given below are for UQ degree programs that require minimum English language entry requirements of Academic IELTS OB6.5 (no score less that 6.0) or equivalent. For UQ package offers for programs that require Academic IELTS higher than minimum see information at the end of Integrated English Level 5 section below.
  • English only/non package students can take the UQ College Placement test if they do not have an accepted English language test result
  • Students with a jagged result profile may be placed at a higher or lower level dependent on learning needs

  • 10 weeks of Integrated English + UQ Degree Package

For UQ programs that require Academic IELTS higher than 6.5 (no score less than 6.0) or equivalent

  • 10 weeks of Integrated English + UQ Degree Package:OB no more than 0.5 band below the specified UQ program requirement. IELTS sub-band scores, no more than 0.5 band below the sub-band requirement.
  • 15 weeks of Integrated English + UQ Degree Package:OB no more than 0.5 band below the specified UQ program requirement. IELTS sub-band scores, no more than 1.0 band below the sub-band requirement.
  • 20 weeks of Integrated English + UQ Degree Package:OB no more than 1.0 band below the specified UQ program requirement. IELTS sub-band scores, no more than 1.0 band below the sub-band requirement.

Testing

Your teachers will provide informal feedback throughout the course. Formal tests on speaking, writing, reading and listening are held at the end of every 5-week session.

The results of the assessment may enable you to:

  • move up to the next level of Integrated English
  • enter UQ’s Foundation Program

Integrated English test results cannot be used for entry to Bridging English or UQ. To transfer to Bridging English or to meet UQ English language entry requirements, students will need to achieve the required IELTS entry score or equivalent.
