Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) is an approved online skills review tool used by UQ College. It determines your reading and numeracy levels within the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

We want to make sure you have the right skills and support to be successful in your course. The BKSB helps us identify any areas where you may need additional support to help you achieve your goals.

The BKSB tool identifies your current working levels for English and Maths, as well as your learning style. This gives us an overview of your learning strengths, so we can best support you while you are studying in your UQ College program. The BKSB tool also identifies gaps in your skills. For each skill gap, there is a learning resource that includes practical exercises and answers to help you find success.

Understanding your own skill and knowledge levels is an important step in commencing a new course of study. Therefore, we require that all new students undertake a BKSB assessment before beginning any training.

All UQ College Vocational Education and Training (VET) students applying for a qualification or subject specialisation must have achieved exit level 3 within BKSB which means that you are categorised within BKSB as a 'capable performer' and that you are capable of working at level 4 which is at Certificate IV level within the VET sector.

The following categories are listed within BKSB for your information:

  1. A novice performer (Certificate I entry)
  2. An advanced beginner (Certificate II - III entry)
  3. A capable performer (Certificate IV entry)
  4. A proficient performer (Diploma entry)
  5. An expert performer (Diploma and above entry)
