Teacher Training

UQ College (formerly ICTE-UQ) has a long and successful history of supporting teachers and academics to improve their teaching practice in English.  

Our programs are suitable for higher education academics at university and vocational education institutions, as well as school teachers. Many of our programs can be customised to suit your professional development needs, resourcing and budgets with both face-to-face, online and in-country delivery options available.  

UQ College offers 3 different types of teacher training:

English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (EMTP)

This option is for English teachers to improve their language skills while learning new methodologies and strategies for teaching.

English Medium Instruction (EMI)

This option is for non-English language teachers to deliver their respective subjects in English.

Integrated English (IE) with Teacher Training Elective 

This option allows you to improve your English skills through our Integrated English program, with an elective subject that focuses on teaching English. You must study this program for a minimum of 5 weeks.

Two teachers working at a deskThe English & Methodology for TESOL Purposes (EMTP) program is a customised group program specifically designed for English teachers from a Non-English-Speaking background (NESB).  

The program offers an opportunity to enhance your English language skills while at the same time learning creative and innovative methodologies appropriate for teaching English in your context.  The program includes workshops, demonstration lessons and practical activities using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) principles. These principles will help you to make your lessons more student centred, increase student motivation and enable your students to gain confidence by communicating more effectively in English.

Three people walking in UQ Great CourtWith an increasingly global world there is a greater need for communicative skills in a second or third language. This customised group program designed for higher education academic and teaching staff who deliver subject content in English.  

It is a practical program focusing how to combine how to deliver content effectively, improve language learning and learning skills. It offers a range of learning strategies which can be used in the classroom and participants will complete a project in which applies the principles to some of their own teaching materials.

  • Exploring strategies to support subject-specific language and communication needs. 

  • Enhancing English proficiency for effective teaching and interaction. 

  • Learning strategies to develop learners' cognitive and academic skills. 

  • Designing engaging lesson plans and activities for an EMI environment.  

Participant feedback has been highly positive both during the program and on successfully applying the EMI principles and learning strategies to various discipline areas. 

The program length, content and focus can be customised and negotiated to suit the needs of clients.

Group of talking at tableIntegrated English is our flagship standalone English program and is ideal to improve your English language proficiency with other students at a similar level to you. The Integrated English program is organised into 5-week sessions.  

The last 4 weeks of each session have one day dedicated to an elective. The Teacher Training Elective is designed for pre-service and in-service teachers who want to improve their teaching practice in English. 

The weekly (except week 1) Integrated English with Teacher Training Elective includes: 

  • 16 hours of Integrated English language lessons 
  • 4 hours of the Teacher Training Elective 

 

The Teacher Training Electives cover development skills, including: 

 

Module A (run over 4 weeks) 

  • Best practice classroom management techniques 

  • Teacher talk – how much is too much?  

  • Effective instruction giving  

  • Utilising classroom space for maximum interaction 

  • Peer teaching 

Module B (run over 4 weeks) 

  • Lesson plans and shapes 

  • Adapting materials 

  • Keeping learners engaged 

  • Making tasks communicative 

  • Warmers and fillers
